Hello all, though I'd call by and introduce myself, I've been toying with various distros' for a while but could never sumon the courage to take the big step away from Microsoft.

Recently bought a Samsung NC10 netbook and didn't want to burden it with windows and anti virus software so dual booting with firstly Ubuntu 8.10 a bit of trouble with the wireless network, nothing that couldn't be fixed with the help of forums etc but the hot keys were an issue, i then upgraded to 9.04 most of the hot keys were fixed, volume and brightness so everything appears to be OK for me at the moment.

Linux takes a bit of work but no more than Microsoft, can't understand what took me so long to change now.

Wouldn't go back now.

Look forward to talking more with you all.

Keep spreading the word.

Saw the Ubuntu user magazine at the newsagents, hints and tips in there as well, worth a look.
Disappointing to hear that the problem is still there in 9.04. It seemed to get a bit better on my system (8.10) over the last couple of months, but has now come back more frequently. Strange.

Anyone know if this a known bug? Should it be reported somewhere perhaps?

well, I cannot replicate this problem when connected to other networks. I am no longer having the problem as I have ditched my bonded adsl setup and gone back to one line. Still odd that it was only affecting firefox running under Ubuntu on my nc10.

Well, after going through many tutorials given here and many other places of connecting using the wireless card, I finally managed getting the stupid thing installed. Sorry, maybe I'm not used to working in the Terminal for so long, it's quite frustrating. /rant

Into the problem, after "successfully" installing the wireless card driver from linux-backports-modules-intrepid (wow, I actually remember the whole thing, probably because I retried it like a hundred times...), and rebooted, there's still no internet.

The only way to go to the Internet is to connect it via ethernet, which sucks obviously. What's Ubuntu for when there's no internet on the fly? So, while spending many hours and sweat troubleshooting, I opened up Hardware Drivers and tried Activating the Atheros driver. (Why would it be disabled in the first place anyway?)

After asking for permission, it goes back to the original screen with the Activate button still... active. To explain better, here's a screenshot. (great, and it's not letting me post external img)
img7.imageshack.us/img7/246/cantconnectpic.png
Note that "This driver was just disabled..." appeared only after pressing the Activate button.

Well, I pressed it again hoping it will work this time, but no. Pressed it again, no, and again, no, again, no... as many times as I press the button, the stupid "This driver was just disabled, but is still in use" comes up again and again and makes no sense to me.

If you think I am very annoyed, sorry but it's really frustrating. But any help from you guys would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think in the laptop mode config file you can specify the spin-up and spin-down parameters.

I haven't played around with that file though, so definitely don't quote me on that.

And perhaps I should note that the "solved" problem was how to control the clicking---which is via laptop-moded. The best/working parameters is not solved, and it seems like there are lots of opinions out there.

I'm actually quite happy with the way the touchpad is behaving. It's slightly niggling not to have got the Touchpad application going, but no big deal really. So please feel free to call it a day! Thanks for the help.

I think you're probably right, Nick. The Touchpad app offers very minimal control - much less than you've already got via xorg.conf - and, like you, if I've got something running satisfactorily, I'm happy with that.

Glad to have been able to join in with your work on this. Let's hope someone else with more knowledge can add the next bit.

That would be great to have.

I'm currently using a fresh install using his instructions and everything is working well so far aside from a few typo errors from the translate which I found out the hard way (the touchpad stopped working haha). But it seems very stable to me in the couple of days I've messed with it. I've been watching videos, listening to mp3's, using OpenOffice, and Firefox.

Would be a good idea for others to test as well though.

That definatly did it, at first I ran the script and it just disabled the wlan, but the LED was on, checking with iwconfig it didn't appear listed and turning it on and off again disabled the LED too. Estimated battery life also increased so I assume its completely powered down.
